3CX Pricing in Australia: How the Costs Actually Work

3CX pricing confuses people for one good reason: it doesn’t work like the per-user-per-month cloud phone products everyone’s used to. 3CX licenses the system, sized by simultaneous calls – and that single difference is why it so often wins on cost for growing Australian businesses. Here’s how the pricing actually works, what 3CX publishes, what gets added on top, and what determines your real total cost.

The licensing model: pay for calls, not people

A 3CX licence is sized in SC – simultaneous calls: the number of conversations (internal and external) happening at the same moment. Staff count only matters for the extension caps, which are generous – as at July 2026, 3CX’s published pricing starts at US$925/year for an 8 SC system supporting up to 40 extensions, with tiers scaling up (16 SC / 80 extensions at $1,760, 24 SC / 120 extensions at $2,405, and so on – see 3CX’s live pricing page for current figures and promotions; prices exclude tax and shift with exchange rates).

Read that again through a per-seat lens: a 40-person office on a typical per-user platform pays for 40 seats forever. On 3CX it might run comfortably on 8-16 SC. That’s the whole trick.

The three editions

3CX currently sells Basic, Pro and AI editions – rising tiers of call-centre features, integrations and (in the newest tier) built-in AI capabilities. Which one you need depends on queues, reporting and CRM requirements – our 3CX editions and feature comparison breaks down exactly what each includes, and smaller teams can start with 3CX StartUP.

What the licence does NOT include

  • Hosting. The licence is the software. It runs on 3CX’s hosting, or – what most of our customers choose – on Australian infrastructure managed by Tronic, where updates, security, backups and monitoring are handled for you.
  • Calls and numbers. Delivered via SIP trunks – your numbers (ported or new) plus call carriage.
  • Handsets – if you want physical phones; the 3CX apps are free and many desks need nothing else. See our guide to the best IP phones for Australian business.
  • Configuration and support – the line item that varies wildly between providers, and the one to interrogate hardest.

The TCO factor everyone underestimates: admin and support

The licence is the visible cost. The invisible one is the hundred small changes a phone system needs every year: new starters, greeting changes, ring-group tweaks, holiday routing, “my mobile app stopped ringing”. Pay per ticket for those and it quietly rivals the licence cost – or worse, a staff member becomes the accidental PBX admin and pays with their time.

This is where Tronic structures things differently: basic support is included free with every 3CX system we deliver – any request under 15 minutes costs nothing (see what’s included). Christmas greetings, new users, app troubleshooting – covered. Your team never needs to learn PBX administration, and your quoted price stays the real price.

Worked sizing examples (SC, not dollars)

  • 5-person professional office: 4 SC is usually plenty; StartUP tier territory.
  • 20-person sales and admin team: 8 SC comfortably; 16 SC if the phones run hot.
  • 50-person business with a 10-agent service desk: 16-24 SC, Pro edition for queue reporting.

We size this from your real call patterns before quoting – oversizing SC is the most common way businesses overpay for 3CX.

Frequently asked questions

How much does 3CX cost in Australia?

The published licence starts at US$925/year for an 8-simultaneous-call system (up to 40 extensions) as at July 2026 – check 3CX’s pricing page for current figures. Your total cost adds hosting, SIP trunks/call carriage, optional handsets and support. Ask us for an all-in Australian quote sized to your call volume.

Is there a free version of 3CX?

Yes – 3CX StartUP covers very small teams free, with paid tiers unlocking more capacity and features. It’s a genuine way to trial the platform before committing.

Is 3CX cheaper than RingCentral or other per-user platforms?

For most teams above ~10 staff, yes, often substantially – because you pay for simultaneous calls rather than per seat. The gap widens as you grow. Model three years at projected headcount to see it clearly.

What’s the difference between 3CX hosted by 3CX and hosted by Tronic?

Same software. With Tronic you get Australian hosting, local support in your timezone, our free included basic support for changes under 15 minutes, and one local party accountable for the PBX, SIP trunks and number porting together.
